
Program of Study
The Instructional Design Program at the University of Tennessee requires 33 credit hours. Each of these courses is 3 credit hours.
The Program
IT 521: Proseminar 1: IT as a Profession
Introduction to instructional technology as a field including definition of the field and career options. Additionally, participants will be introduced to visual design principles, ethical issues, and usability testing within the context of electronic media development.
IT 573: Introduction to Multimedia Instruction
Selected computer-based multimedia production tools and use to produce instructional materials based on specific learner characteristics and objectives.
IT 532:Online Learning Environments
Theory, research and practice of designing, developing and evaluating online learning
environments including distance education and blended learning approaches.
EDPY 533: Program Evaluation I
Issues and practices in planning and conducting program evaluations in a variety of settings. Fundamentals of theory, ethics, design, measurement, and data analysis; proper role and use of evaluation in educational organizations. Will develop an evaluation proposal to use in course 534 (Program Evaluation II).
EDPY 521 - Program Planning in Adult Education
Theories and methods from research and practice in planning and operating educational programs. The focus is on the practice of planning educational programs. Concepts can be applied in a variety of contexts such as professional development, health education, training in the workplace, or parent education.
IT 570: Instructional Systems Design
Application of theory and research of instructional systems design to solve instructional problems in educational settings. Application of instructional design techniques to create well-designed and effective media appropriate for educational settings. This course is the second in a two-course instructional design and development sequence.
IT 578: Instructional Media Development
Application of instructional design techniques to create well-designed and effective media appropriate for educational settings. This course is the second in a two-course instructional design and development sequence.
IT 594: Proseminar 2: Trends and Careers in Instructional Technology
Capstone course for the master’s program will include design, development and review of the portfolio requirement as well as discussion of current issues, trends and professional development opportunities in the field.
IT 566:Understanding Online Interaction
Assessment and evaluation of online learning environments using data-driven techniques.
IT 577:Practicum in Online Learning Environments
Field-based project involving aspects of the instructional design process in an online learning environment with reflection on theory and practice issues.
EDPY 523: Adult Learning in Social Context
Examining the social contexts of adult education, and the role of adult education in society, including race, class, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity analyses. Addressing relevant historical, sociological, political, and economic factors that influence adult education theory, practice, and research.
