Authorship of Multimedia for Learning

Artifact One: Interact Appropriately with People with Disabilites

Description: I created this microlearning module for The Rumie Initiative to build confidence among learners in their ability to interact with people with disabilities. The module is available to the public according to Rumie's philosophy of learning for all. People often shy away from interacting with individuals with disabilities due to uncertainty about how to approach these situations. This module addresses the problem in a ten-minute lesson and arms the learner with the knowledge to interact with confidence.

Rationale for Inclusion: This asynchronous, self-guided microlearning module conveys my competence in interactive media compositions for learning. The course includes quiz questions for knowledge checks. The learner is engaged through images, text, quizzes, videos, and a call to action. The artifact aligns with AECT standards because it conveys my experience applying appropriate technology to improve learning and performance outcomes.

AECT Standards:

  • Standard 1- Content Knowledge

  • Standard 2- Content Pedagogy

  • Standard 3- Learning Environments

  • Standard 4- Professional Knowledge and Skills

Artifact Two: Server Training 2.0

Description: In IT 573, we were tasked with "teaching someone something," through multimedia. Consistent with my interest in workplace learning, I researched and developed an instructional design for restaurant servers to hone their skills.

Rationale for Inclusion: This asynchronous, self-guided microlearning module conveys my competence in interactive media compositions for learning. The course is entirely housed in a web site with free hosting. The course engages the learners through images, galleries, text, and custom videos. The artifact aligns with AECT standards because it conveys my experience applying appropriate technology to improve learning and performance outcomes.

AECT Standards:

  • Standard 1- Content Knowledge

  • Standard 2- Content Pedagogy

  • Standard 3- Learning Environments

  • Standard 4- Professional Knowledge and Skills

Artifact Three: Upping the Conflict

Description: I created this animated video in PowToon for IT 578. The video is designed as the second video for incorporation in a module about Conflict and Motivation for fiction writers.

Rationale for Inclusion: This video conveys my ability to use multimedia in learning design to grab attention and address needs in engaging ways. In fiction writing, authors often fail to connect with their readers due to their character's lack of conflict and motivation. I designed this learning approach, wrote the script, designed the video, and edited the sound and video. While this may appear to be a cartoon to some, to fiction writers, it is a visual for clear communication of an authentic real-world problem. The artifact aligns with AECT standards because it conveys my experience applying appropriate technology to improve learning and performance outcomes.

AECT Standards:

  • Standard 1- Content Knowledge

  • Standard 2 - Content Pedagogy

  • Standard 3- Learning Environments

  • Standard 4- Professional Knowledge and Skills

Artifact Four: Sea Turtle Spectacular Game

Description: I created this interactive game in Articulate Storyline for a gamification assignment in IT 578. Unlike most of my learning design projects, the Sea Turtle Spectacular is appropriate for children as well as adults and conveys knowledge on conservation, protecting ocean life, and our impact on the environment.

Rationale for Inclusion: I included this interactive game because this simple design is useful for facilitating a wide range of learning. This interactive multimedia composition for learning promotes engagement through practice and immediate feedback. I designed the game so that each step could be revisited for increased knowledge transfer. The artifact aligns with AECT standards because it conveys my experience applying appropriate technology to improve learning and performance outcomes.

AECT Standards:

  • Standard 1 - Content Knowledge

  • Standard 2- Content Pedagogy

  • Standard 3- Learning Environments

  • Standard 4- Professional Knowledge and Skills
